How to Access Former Employer Registered Pension Plans and Locked-in Retirement Accounts in Canada (Before Age 65)
Written by Mark Sager

Most Canadians believe that they are not able to access their former employer pension plans, LIRA, LRSP or LIF until retirement.

This is not always the case.

By understanding federal and provincial registrations and unlocking provisions, you can access your funds now rather than waiting until retirement age.

Keep in mind this only applies for former employer pension plans… Current employer pension plans must remain locked until termination of employment.

If you’ve paid into a company pension plan in the past you may be eligible to access those funds even if they have already been transferred into a locked in retirement account. (LIRA)
